Hospitality is one of the most popular sectors for Erasmus+ internships, and Valencia is an excellent place for it. As a tourist city with a strong food culture, it offers students in cooking, service, reception and tourism programmes a real-life learning environment.

Why Valencia for hospitality students?

Valencia welcomes visitors all year round, from city trippers and conference guests to beach holidaymakers. The city is also the home of paella and has a lively food scene, from traditional restaurants to modern bars and the Central Market. For hospitality students, that means varied places to work and plenty of inspiration.

Where can students do their internship?

Depending on their field of study and level, students can be placed in, for example:

  • hotels, in reception, housekeeping or food and beverage
  • restaurants and cafés, in the kitchen or in service
  • catering and events
  • tourism businesses, such as tour operators or visitor services

Every placement is matched to the student’s programme and learning goals, and confirmed before arrival.

What do students learn?

Beyond the technical skills of their trade, a hospitality internship abroad helps students to:

  • work in an international team and communicate with guests from many countries
  • improve their Spanish and English in real situations
  • discover Mediterranean ingredients, dishes and service styles
  • become more independent and confident

How much Spanish is needed?

Many guests speak English, but some Spanish makes a big difference in the kitchen and with colleagues. We recommend a short Spanish course before or at the start of the internship. Our language school Koyot Academy offers lessons in Valencia.

Practical tips for schools

  • Start planning at least three months before arrival, so there is time to find the right host companies.
  • Share each student’s level, specialisation and any certificates, such as food hygiene training.
  • Prepare students for Spanish working hours: lunch and dinner are served later than in many other European countries.
  • Make sure students bring suitable work clothes and shoes, and check whether the host company provides a uniform.
