An internship abroad is not only about new tasks, it is also about new habits. Knowing what to expect in a Spanish workplace helps students feel confident from day one and make a good first impression.
Working hours and lunch
Many Spanish companies work a split day: a morning block, a longer lunch break and an afternoon block. Others, especially in summer, work a continuous day (jornada intensiva) from early morning until mid-afternoon. Lunch is usually later than in northern Europe, often between 14:00 and 15:30, and dinner rarely starts before 21:00. Students should confirm their exact schedule with the host company on the first day.
Greetings and forms of address
- At work, a handshake is the safe choice. In informal settings two kisses on the cheek are common too; when in doubt, follow the other person’s lead.
- Most workplaces switch to the informal tú quickly, even with supervisors. Usted is used in more formal situations, for example with older customers.
- A friendly buenos días when arriving and hasta mañana when leaving goes a long way.
Communication style
Spanish colleagues are often direct, warm and talkative. Conversations can be lively and people sometimes speak at the same time; this is usually a sign of engagement, not rudeness. Asking questions is welcome, because it shows interest.
Punctuality
Social plans can be relaxed about time, but work is different. Interns should arrive on time, tell their supervisor in advance if they will be late or absent, and stick to agreed deadlines.
Dress code
This depends on the sector. Offices often expect smart casual clothing, while hospitality, technical and care sectors may use uniforms or safety clothing. It is best to ask before departure.
Tips for a good start
- Learn a few work phrases in Spanish before arriving.
- Keep a small notebook for new tasks and new words.
- Join colleagues for coffee or lunch when invited: that is where relationships are built.
- Ask for feedback halfway through the internship.
